Artist Statement
Leaning into society’s perception of my identity as a spoiled housewife, I create painting, printmaking, fibers and installation work that addresses the issues of domesticity, feminism, consumerism, fantasy, and the conflict between real, perceived, and manufactured identities. My compositions rely on line, saturated color, and an abundance of movement to create a sensory experience. Through the use of craft-based processes and layering of a wide range of ingredients like paint skins and squirts, single-use plastics and recycled fibers, I create highly textured but ethereal pieces that can merge landscape, figuration, and abstraction. The combination of recognizable readymades from the art history canon and materials used for their power to signify charge the work with meaning. This enables me to create art that shows my hand, celebrates humor and irony, and prioritizes chance, imperfection and ingenuity.

Now, the longer version…
My love for materials and their transformation comes from my childhood. I was born and grew up in San Salvador, El Salvador, during the civil war years. During this time, there was a chronic scarcity of consumer goods that affected every single person in the country. My mother was particularly inventive in reinventing the resources we had and transforming them into wonderful, new things. She passed this knowledge on to me, which today I use as the base of my art practice.
I became a lawyer and worked in the financial sector in both El Salvador and the United States, where I emigrated in 2001. Upon retiring from my law practice to care for my son, who had been diagnosed with Autism, I started a nonprofit whose mission is to provide funding for educational and job training programs for people with disabilities. I did this as a tribute to the parents who came before me and advocated for the recognition of a child’s right to an appropriate and equal education, regardless of ability.
Shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic, I rediscovered my love for making art, especially that which transforms materials into work charged with symbolism and power. And so I embarked on a new career as a full-time artist. Currently, I live in Winter Park, FL with my husband, my teenage children, and my amazing mother, who holds down the fort while I make my work.
